This post is part of a series about how to sync your contacts across multiple address books. Visit our sync center for a full list of our how-to guides.

You can sync your Mac Address Book with iPhone in three easy steps. This is a good way to make sure that your contacts and other information always stay backed up in case something happens to your iPhone.

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your Mac

Take out the connector cord provided with your iPhone, and connect it with your Mac. Connecting it will automatically load up iTunes.

On the left hand navigation of iTunes, there is a section called Devices. The name of your iPhone should be listed there. Click into that if you’re not already there.

Step 2: Set up contacts sync

On the top navigation, navigate to Info, which is directly to the right of Summary.

The second option down is to Sync Address Book Contacts. Check this box.

If you’d like your Address Book Contacts to overwrite the contacts on your iPhone, you can also scroll further to Advanced. Under this section, you can check the Contacts to Replace information on this iPhone.

Step 3: Start your sync

Once you’ve completed setup, click the Apply button on the bottom right and iTunes will begin your sync. Based on how many contacts are being changed, iTunes may show you a few popups about a significant number of contacts being changed or conflicts arising. Follow their wizard to resolve your merged details, and you’ll be all set.

if it would only work this way..mine is completely screwed up. Even though I turn off the sync feature before I disconnect, next time I connect the iphone it automatically syncs again, even though it told me before disconnecting that it will not sync anymore. Screwed up is saying it mildly: I have tried it countless times and it will keep syncing even though i uncheck the box. So I call it fucked up, really fucked up ;<

It may be that you’re managing your sync settings through iTunes. I’d check that too as well as the Mac Address Book settings. Hopefully that will help.

I’ve got about 600 contacts (mostly email addresses) in address book on my mac and about 150 contacts on my iphone that all have phone numbers.  What I want to do is to have a separate file on my mac to back up the iphone contacts only.  Is there a way to do this?

    Thanks

Hmm. This would be an ugly way of doing it but you could do a full export of all of your Mac Address Book Contacts, temporarily delete the contacts, sync with iPhone, make a second backup, delete, and then re-import your original set of contacts.

Otherwise you can probably try separating out your original contacts into a new group, and viewing your original contacts through that group. That way you don’t have to futz with deleting and can continuously sync.

I like this post but the sync did not copy the Notes for each contact.  Is there any way to do that?

  • Jjjoan

i would only like to export my contacts to my address book, basically I’d like to keep certain contacts in the address book and not my iphone, and everytime i delete them on my phone, they pop back up when i’d like to leave it in  my address book only,

Neither my contacts nor my apps get uploaded from my iPhone to my Mac.

I followed these same instructions and the sync doesn’t work. Anyone else have this issue? I created several groups on macbook pro, but they’re not showing up in the iPhone’s Contacts.

“I followed these same instructions and the sync doesn’t work.” Yea. Me too. iTunes 10.5.2 and OSX 10.7.2

It was iCloud for me. Had to go to Address Book Preferences…and remove iCloud account. Which DELETED all the contacts in the Address Book. Thank god for backups. Restored all the contacts I had in my backup to the Address Book. Then the iTunes / iPhone contact sync worked fine.

My phone contacts seem to be syncing with my Mac as it appears from the iTunes progress bar. However, the contacts from iPhone do not seem to be updated on the Mac’s Address Book. On the contrary any new contacts created on iPhone are getting erased by this sync process. Appreciate any help.

I get Itunes and click then double click on my iphone in devices but nothing happens.  Where am I supposed to find the info tab???

  • Lewbryan

I click on my iphone listed under devices and nothing happens.  You say, “ On the top navigation, navigate to Info, which is directly to the right of Summary.”    Where is the top navigation????  How do you navigate to Info???

  • Costas V.

Same here… instructions didn’t work for me until I followed Gary Hardy’s comment and Signed out from iCloud BUT chose to keep the contacts on my Mac, so no contacts were erased from the Address Book. Then forced replaced contacts in iTunes with Mac and sync gave the desired result!

  • Glock1986

    Worked great thanks!!

  • Philip Lyon

I also had the iCloud problem.  Heres the quick solution.  On the iPhone go to settings > iCloud> then turn contacts off.  Go back to iTunes and sync as directed above.  When the sync is complete you can turn iCloud contacts back on and everything will be as it should.  You dont have to delete your account or anything to do this.
